Artist's Description

During the 80's, reggae exploded onto the South Florida concert scene with dominance and vigor. Local promoters entertained the new and developing Jamaican/Caribbean community by presenting some of the world's most renowned reggae artists in concert in local parks and arenas around South Florida. I was privileged to be exposed to this unique time in our local Caribbean history and captured the experience through the lens of my cameras. I was among the very few photographers (especially female photographers) who were given backstage passes to photograph these icons up close and personal. Some photos are historical and one of a kind. At times I captured the performers at their worst and their best.

My journey as a photographer begun as a junior in high school while enrolled in an introduction to Journalism and Communications class. My Journalism teacher handed me a Polaroid point and shoot camera and sent me out to photograph random scenes around the school for the school newspaper and yearbook. She later critiqued several of my pictures and encouraged me to continue practicing and developing my photography skills. My journalism teacher believed that I had a talent for photography. I pursued Journalism and Communications in college, which resulted in a bachelor’s degree in Broadcasting Communications from the University of Florida. I found an extra love for taking pictures and my cameras lived in the trunk of my car. I...
